Birds of a Feather: A Graphic Poem

001_cover v2.jpg

Birds of a Feather is a collaboration between spoken word poet Steve Locke and graphic artist Adam Pagtakhan, which adapts written verse to a comic book narrative. In his poem, Locke empathizes with another’s emotional crisis following a traumatic life event, offering support from his own account of survival and recovery. From this, Pagtakhan manifests the story our protagonist: a little bird with an injured wing. Broken and vulnerable, he is thrust into a journey across a surreal and dangerous landscape. Beaten by the elements and barely surviving encounters with frightening monsters, he follows a mysterious trail of fallen feathers: omens of hope which keep him struggling towards salvation.

Affirming personal strength and the inner resources to find and create spaces to recover and thrive, Birds of a Feather is emotionally resonant and rendered in a vibrant collage of words and images. Including a heartfelt afterword and a list of supports, this book is an invaluable resource to anyone experiencing trauma and mental health struggles, whether as a survivor or someone who supports them.
